SCHOOL PROJECT

This project was completed in the spring term of my second year and was a kindergarden through 8th grade school. The school was influenced by the Sudbury teaching model. Within the Sudbury pedagogy there is no set structure for how a child can or will learn. The child has the ability to choose what they want to learn, how they want to learn, and how they are evaluated. That being said there are many types of spaces that the children can learn in. These settings could be anything from a typical classroom to outside to a room that is only big enough for a small group.

The classroom settings I have designed include large classrooms and small classrooms with a courtyard so that there is a controlled outdoor space. The smaller classrooms are used for individual and small group learning while the larger classrooms are used for large group learning. With no set structure many children choose to socialize which they can do in the courtyard that is in the middle of the building so that they can be supervised by the staff.

The larger group classrooms are located on the first floor with access to the courtyard. The smaller group classrooms are located on the second floor to allow for more privacy and quietness for the children who want to learn in an individual setting. The small classrooms have small inoperable windows that look out at the courtyard so that they can see into the courtyard but most of the noise is blocked out.
